Go! Serve! – That’s What They Did

A story of two willing hearts sharing in the Global Scholars vision.

Linda and David Funk

Linda and David Funk have the unique experience of serving Global Scholars and living out their faith serving as professors, volunteering at the home office and donating regularly to the ministry.

Their story brings encouragement as we now have 65 people with their families teaching and living out their faith all over the world.

In a 1996 a good friend introduced them to Global Scholars. “I have the perfect mission organization for you,” he stated. When David heard this he was still working on his PhD and working full time. The timing was not quite right yet. After a little while David and Linda started receiving our mailings.

In 1999 Linda and David read “Experiencing God” by Henry Blackaby. This brought them to a point where they more fervently prayed and discussed how God would use their skills and talents. At this time Linda was a trust officer and VP at a bank and David continued his work for the Federal Grain Inspection Service, part of the USDA.

That year they were finally able to attend the annual event in Kansas City. Linda recounts the comfort that came from being in a room with so many highly educated and interesting Christians. They were immediately comfortable with the group.

The following year they planned to go to the annual event. The day of the event David had been working out of town and was waiting for a plane to go home. While waiting at the airport, he pulled out his Bible and read Acts 26:17b, “I am sending you to them to open their eyes and turn them from darkness to light, and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.”

After his plane landed David told Linda what he had read. “Dave,” she said “I will follow you wherever God leads us.” This was the first day of the conference, which started their journey with Global Scholars.

The next day Linda read Genesis 12:1 “…leave your country, your people and your father’s household….” This was the moment she knew what God wanted them to do.

After applying and being accepted they wrote one letter asking for funds and announcing their call. God provided the support they needed with just this one letter and funded the ministry in three months time. When on average it takes a person two years to fund. Finally, in fall of 2001 they started their assignment in Hungary. They spent four very fulfilling years serving in Hungary.

When they returned to the US, Linda started working on staff at Global Scholars. She worked for several years in the area of planned giving. Now David and Linda continue to support the ministry.

Their most recent adventures include David just recently retiring and a trip back to Hungary and Europe to reconnect with friends and colleagues. When Linda was asked “What next?” her answer was the same as it was years ago, “We will do whatever God leads us to do.” No doubt the plan that God has wonderful plan for their future.

Global Scholars staff, professors and the students they have taught are appreciative of the many sacrifices they made along the way and the way they shared the love and message of Jesus Christ.
